Have you ever tried Garlic Noodles? These noodles are a rich, buttery, salty and sweet, umami-filled dream. They are usually served as a side dish, but I decided to make them the main course. It’s easier to cook one main dish and two sides for dinner than one. Ammi right? Garlic Noodles with Beef & Broccoli to make dinner easier!

What is OYSTER SAUCE?

The oyster sauce is the main ingredient in this recipe. This sauce is thick, rich and salty, with a lot of umami. This sauce isn’t fishy. It’s rich, salty, and delicious. Oyster sauce can be found in most grocery stores’ international aisle, next to other Southeast Asian ingredients. Although it’s quite affordable, you can get a better deal if you go to an Asian market. To see what kind of oyster sauce I used, scroll down to the step-by-step photos below the recipe.

CAN I USE HOISIN SAUCCE INSIDE?

Many people have commented on my Garlic Noodles recipe, stating that they used hoisin sauce instead of oyster sauce. I haven’t tried this swap but have heard good things about it. Although they are very similar in colour and consistency, their flavours differ quite a bit. The Hoisin sauce is sweeter and less rich than the other, so that you will get different results.

CAN I FREEZE GARLIC NOODLES WITH BEEF OR BROCCOLI?

This dish is not recommended for freezing. The sauce could absorb into the noodles, making them dry.

Is THIS A RECIPE SPY?

No. No. You can skip the crushed red pepper flakes at the end if you prefer a non-spicy version.

GARLIC NOODLES – BEEF AND BROCCOLI

Garlic Noodles With Beef and Broccoli are a quick and simple all-in-one meal recipe that includes a rich, buttery and salty sauce.

Prep time: 10 minutes

Cooking Time: 15 minutes

Total Time: 25 minutes

INGREDIENTS

  • 4 tbsp oyster sauce ($0.40)
  • 3 Tbsp butter divided ($0.30).
  • 1 Tbsp soy sauce ($0.12)
  • 3 Tbsp brown sugar ($0.12)
  • 1 Tbsp toasted sesame oil* ($0.30)
  • 1/2 lb. Ground beef ($2.65)
  • 4 cloves of garlic ($0.32)
  • 1/2 lb. frozen broccoli florets ($1.30)
  • 8 oz. spaghetti ($0.55)
  • 4 green onions (0.40)
  • 2 teaspoons crushed red pepper flake ($0.05)

INSTRUCTIONS

  • In a bowl, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Microwave for 20 seconds. Next, add the oyster sauce and soy sauce. Mix well and set aside.
  • Bring a large saucepan of water to a boil. Bring the water to a boil. Once the water has boiled, add the spaghetti. Boil the spaghetti for 7 minutes. The spaghetti should be strained into a colander.
  • Start the beef and the broccoli while the spaghetti is still cooking. Melt the rest of the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Continue to cook the ground beef over medium heat for 5-7 minutes. Drain the fat if you are using beef with higher fat content. I used 10% fat, and it was not enough.
  • While the beef cooks, chop the garlic. Continue to sauté the garlic in the skillet along with the browned beef. Cook for another 1-2 minutes or until the garlic is softened.
  • Frozen broccoli florets can be added to the skillet along with beef, garlic, and onion. Cook the broccoli on medium heat until it is no longer frozen. You can continue to cook the broccoli in the next steps. It doesn’t need to be heated to boiling.
  • Add the pasta, cooked and drain, and the prepared sauce to your skillet with the beef. Cook and stir the ingredients until well combined.
  • Just before serving, slice the green onions. Sprinkle some crushed red pepper flakes on top.

NOTES

*Toasted sesame oils do not always include “toasted” on their labels. Sesame oil should be deep brown and not light straw. Toasted sesame oils have a stronger and more nuanced flavour than regular ones. To see how I made it, scroll down to the step-by-step photos.
